My Teaching Philosophy: Nurturing Future Educators
Explore the core beliefs and practices that guide my commitment to education and student success at CSUB. Discover how I empower educators to thrive and lead in their classrooms.

Our shared commitment to quality education
Every child deserves access to a quality, public education. If someone feels the call to teach those children, leaders should do everything they can to nurture that person. Teachers are a valuable class of people. I strive to assist new and mid-career-change educators to grow as teaching practitioners and school leaders. I appreciate knowing my students’ needs as there are many challenges to success and educators need much support to achieve and improve their craft. I also feel that understanding the systems in which educators work is vital, as systems can dramatically impact delivery of instruction.

Empowering future classroom leaders
After taking my course, EDEL 5300, my students should be able to create and maintain a well-managed elementary classroom which fosters a positive learning environment that recognizes the needs of students from diverse academic and social backgrounds. This course focuses on practical strategies and a deep understanding of student diversity, preparing you for real-world classroom challenges.

Engaging methods for effective learning
With the premier textbook of classroom management, 'The First Days of School' by Wong & Wong as a guide, students will engage in independent study, a group research project, and personal reflections, as they witness the modeling of effective practices in video or by Dr. Covert. Additionally, students will role-play classroom scenarios, teacher interviews, and parent conferences to get a 'real-world' feel for what it is like to conduct their own classroom. This hands-on approach ensures you gain confidence and practical skills.
"Dr. Covert's passion for nurturing educators is truly inspiring. Her courses provided me with the practical skills and confidence I needed to manage my classroom effectively and support diverse learners."
